Bringing Moisture Back to Your Natural Hair

by Justina Simpson, Owner of Modern Queen Life @modernqueenlife

Taking care of my natural hair has definitely been a journey for me. After doing the “big chop” in 2012, I soon realized that my natural hair did not retain as much moisture as my relaxed hair. Along my natural hair journey, I learned that healthy hair starts with keeping my scalp and hair moisturized. I recently dyed my natural hair—a process that can lead to dryness and breakage if not properly maintained.

A great method to restore and maintain moisture is adding a “Pre-Poo” to your hair wash routine. A pre-poo or pre-shampoo is a method of nurturing the scalp and hair prior to shampooing and conditioning. During the shampooing process, hair is cleaned but nutrients can also be stripped away.

There are several pre-poo recipes floating around the Internet. Avocado pre-poos are my absolute favorite because the consistency is comparable that of hair masks I’ve found in stores. Some ingredients can be found right in your kitchen.

DIY Avocado Pre-Poo:

1 ripe Hask Avocado

2 tablespoons of Olive oil

1 tablespoon of Shea oil

1 tablespoon of Argan oil

In a small, mixing bowl, combine all ingredients to a creamy consistency. (You may place this recipe in the microwave for 15 seconds to help achieve this consistency).

1. Part your hair into 4 equal sections then lightly dampen with water.

2. Work the pre-poo mixture into each hair section with your fingertips.

3. Create two-strand twists with each section. (This will help with ensure with moisture retention)

4. Cover your hair with a shower/processing cap for 1 hour.

5. Unravel your hair, follow up with your regular shampoo and conditioning routine. (Use shampoos and conditioners that are sulfate and paraben free- to reduce stripping of the hair. (Optional: add additional oil to your hair while still wet to help reduce frizz and to define your hair texture).

After your wash routine, your hair should feel more moisturized upon completion. You may substitute the oils in the recipe with other moisturizing oils such as coconut oil, jojoba, and/or castor oil.
